Clay Curious: 4 Week Hand building Class

Curious about hand building with clay? This is for you!

Join us for a fun and beginner-friendly 4-week class where you'll learn to create functional and decorative pottery by hand. In this class you can choose your own adventure with what you make, bring your ideas. Guided by what the students want to create, we explore different techniques such as slab-building, sculpting, working with templates and forms, and surface decoration.

Upcoming Classes:
  • Mon. Oct 19-Nov 16  from 6-9pm with Sarah Shams
    • Nov 9 is a break week to allow bisque firing

What to Expect:

Week 1: We’ll begin by covering the fundamentals of hand building:

  • Working with slabs and templates
  • Planning a successful project
  • Understanding clay thickness, structure, and attachment
  • Basic studio tools and techniques

Week 2: We'll build on what we learnt last week, refine the forms created last week and potentially start new projects.

Week 3:  This is our last "building" class. We’ll focus on finishing and decorating techniques:

  • Using underglazes and underglaze transfers
  • Final refinements and clean-up
  • Preparing work for firing

Break week: this is too allow all of our pieces to dry and go through their first kiln firing (bisque firing) in preparation for next week.

Week 4:  Glaze week! Learn how to properly glaze your pieces. Choose from our in-house glazes and experiment with colour and design.

A friendly reminder: Due to the nature of clay and the firing process, we cannot guarantee the final outcome of any piece. While we take great care with all work, warping, cracking, or breakage can occur. We like to say, “don’t fall in love with your piece until it makes it home with you!”

  • Due to limited space in our studio, your pieces will be put up for adoption 1 month after they're ready for pick-up. Contact us if you would like to inquire about shipping.
