Specialty Workshop:
Learn Nerikomi with artist Eiko Maeda
Learn the process of Nerikomi with Artist Eiko Maeda in our full-day, hands-on workshop! Eiko trained under the late Eiji Murofushi (Fuji, Japan), one of the pioneers in the field of Nerikomi ceramics.
Nerikomi is a traditional Japanese pottery technique that involves combining differently coloured clays to create patterns within the clay itself. By carefully layering, stacking, and shaping the coloured clays, intricate geometric or organic patterns are revealed once slicing through the block.
Eiko will be demonstrating this unique process and showing students how to achieve two different patterns using the Nerikomi method.
By the end of the workshop, you'll have a better understanding of her process, and will create your very own pieces using porcelain clay and molds or forms. Students are also welcome to bring their own molds to use (must be within 5-6" in diameter). Students will have the opportunity to purchase the necessary tools and materials to practice nerikomi at home or in the studio.
